otterbop: Come on, what happened? WHY did you have brain surgery? And what plusses did you benefit from? More importantly, what was the most fascinating or strange part of your brain surgery experience?
Have you ever worried that they accidentally sliced into some important part of your brain, but didn’t tell you? What if you lost some highly important part of your brain / mind, and yet you are totally unable to realize this fact, since your very capacity to recognize what has happened to you was removed when that part of your brain was damaged? Anyway, this is what I would worry about if I had brain surgery. Scary stuff, huh? Okay, I shouldn’t have brought it up—just thinking about this could freak someone out.
By the way, does anyone HAVE cosmetic brain surgery? Sounds interesting, but I seriously doubt it. Great idea though.
But I think it would be awesome to have a risk-free brain surgery (if such existed), and have the surgeon touch many places on my brain with a weak electrode, like the brain surgeon Wilder Penfield did in the 1950's, in order to evoke extraordinarily vivid memories (as if re-living the experience) and intense/powerful/bizarre experiences. Then they could place an electrode on each of the spots that evoke my favorite memories and experiences, and the wisest states of mind I’ve ever had. When I wake up, they could give me a special remote control with which I could activate any one of these electrodes at will…
Now THAT would be cool. This has been a fantasy of mine since the thought occurred to me many years ago. Am I abnormal? Sign me up when this technology is available, and the risk is negligible.
Come to think of it, I don’t want the electrodes to be magnetic, lest I walk through a strong magnetic field and get my brain scrambled. And I don’t want them to heat up in the presence of microwaves, or any other electromagnetic radiation, lest my brain heat up and cook when I talk on a cellphone or walk underneath a power line. Etc. You gotta be careful with the brain, you know!
I once had the pleasure of dissecting a brain in an anatomy class (fortunately, the guy had been dead for quite some time). I was great.

Re: why did you have brain surgery?
Wed, October 27, 2004 - 1:56 AMYou know, I'm actually a nurse in the west london centre for neurosurgery and we have patients who have electrodes inserted but its usuallly for parkinsons and multiple sclerosis, they have like a box in the chest which u can control with infra red technology and shit. they do the surgery while the guy is awake and talking to the surgeon.
Hopefully u'll never need to have it.
Oh and being here in london, its all free! god bless the NHS -

Wed, October 27, 2004 - 3:31 PMdude, no offense to the NHS, but I'm VERY thankful I got private health insurance a month before my accident and was able to get worked on by professional and not some unionized gob.
